ROBERT GODFRIED
FWF VICE PRESIDENT
ABOUT ME
Hi all! My name is Robert Godfried and I am a freshman in Columbia College studying History and Political Science. I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and my family moved around a lot when I was younger but I ended up growing up mostly in a town called Manhasset, in Nassau County Long Island. In High School, I was an avid swimmer and loved writing for my High School Paper and senior year decided to become a leader in both organizations. I choose these leadership positions because I saw a potential for positive change in these organizations and wanted to be a part of creating that change. I am also a political junkie and an avid reader of The New York Times. I have always wanted to change things through government and social structures and I see CCSC as my chance to make a positive impact on the Columbia Community. On a different note, I also love the outdoors and have hiked and camped in national parks throughout the country. Additionally, I have a deep passion for the West Wing and a quirky obsession with jazz music.
MY PLATFORM
Being part of the group, Five Ways Forward, we have common campaign goals like the facilitation of student-administration interaction, creation of a Columbia Guidebook, improving the class registration process, integration of more student public spaces on campus and bringing together the Columbia Community. Personally, I want to work to bring together the Columbia Community. Often we end up spending much of our time with our immediate social circle and branch out only through our activities and classes. To remedy this, I want to create more campus wide-events that will allow students to meet classmates who they might not otherwise interact with. Additionally, I want to create more dorm-wide and floor activities in order to build stronger communities within the residential halls. Another way I plan to build a closer-knit community is through improved access to the dining halls. Currently, both John Jay and Ferris Booth close at 8pm, preventing students who might want a late dinner from having any alternative to JJ’s place. JJ’s place is also not open late on weekends, depriving student of a vital late-night gathering spot. If elected I will work with Columbia Dining to improve access to dining halls at all times of day. Another major issue that I plan to address is the registration process. I want to make the process smoother through cross-integration of the various related websites (such as the CU Directory and SSOL). I also want to improve the professor-rating platform CULPA. I want to encourage more student review of various professors in order to make its rating more accurate and less biased towards extreme opinions. As an elected representative of the student body, my main focus would be to understand the problems of our community and work with the administration to create practical solutions to these problems. I plan to identify these specific problems through platforms such as WTF (What to Fix) Columbia, Facebook and other social media sites. In this manner I can identify specific problems that the Columbia Community is facing and work with the administration to create practical solutions. In finality, if elected I will work to further unite the Columbia Community, improve access to dining halls, improve the registration process and work with the Columbia Administration to address the specific problems of the Columbia Community.bsites (such as the CU Directory and SSOL).
