MITCHELL BROADWATER

FWF REPRESENTATIVE

ABOUT ME

I've worked as President of my school's student body, working on direct student events and issues, including charity events and facilitated teacher access after-hours for students looking for additional tutoring. I also worked at the county government level to increase student attendance at general assembly meetings, and worked with the student member of the board of education for my school’s district on issues with restructuring, overpopulation, and school start times. As Captain of my school’s crew team, president of its improv society and economics club, and member of both the National and Spanish honor societies, I also coordinated joint events.

MY PLATFORM

Being part of the group, Five Ways Forward, we have common campaign goals like the facilitation of student-administration interaction, creation of a Columbia Guidebook, improving the class registration process, and integration of more student public spaces on campus. I personally want to improve communication between students, the student government and the administration. I want to make sure that the freshman class is well represented- that our problems are heard and brought to the administration- and our party has plans to open forums to make sure students can openly communicate the events they want to do, the issues they want dealt with, and whatever comments or suggestions they have for the school in general. We want to make sure that student government run facilities, the websites used to keep Columbia informed of what the student government is doing, are up to date and increase their publicity so students know and can access that info at any time. We’re planning on integrating things onto Facebook and Twitter, and creating a mobile app that provides info on the school in general along with the actions of the student council. Columbia is famous for its discourse, for freedom of thought and expressed opinion among its student body. We want to emphasize that, make sure that the thoughts and opinions of Columbia students are heard, and be a student council that is open and receptive, so we can respond and adapt to the needs of the students. Essentially, we want to make Columbia more accessible for students- and make sure it’s responsive to input from the student body.
